Some places are famous because of their size. Some are remembered because of their history. And then there are places like Lakkundi, where history quietly lives in every stone.
Located near Gadag in Karnataka, Lakkundi is a small village with a remarkable collection of ancient temples, stepwells, sculptures and inscriptions. Once an important centre during the Kalyana Chalukya period, Lakkundi gives us a glimpse into the art and architecture of medieval Karnataka. Walking through the village feels a little like walking through an open-air museum. Everywhere you look, there is something interesting: a carved pillar, an old temple, a stone sculpture, an ancient well or an inscription.
The Kashi Vishwanatha Temple is one of the highlights of Lakkundi. Its detailed stone carvings, pillars and beautifully decorated entrance show the remarkable craftsmanship of the period. The Brahma Jinalaya reflects Lakkundi’s strong Jain heritage, while the many smaller temples and ancient structures add to the character of the village. The stepwells are another fascinating part of Lakkundi. These were not simply places to collect water, but carefully designed structures that combined engineering and architecture.

What I found interesting about Lakkundi is that you don’t have to look for history. It is everywhere. A carved stone, a weathered pillar, an old inscription or a forgotten sculpture can suddenly catch your attention and make you wonder about the people who created it centuries ago.
Unlike some of Karnataka’s better-known heritage destinations, Lakkundi feels quiet and unhurried. That gives you time to walk around, look closely at the carvings and appreciate the details. If you are travelling through North Karnataka and enjoy history, architecture and photography, Lakkundi is definitely worth spending a few hours exploring.
Lakkundi may not have the crowds of Hampi, but perhaps that is part of its charm. Here, history speaks softly through the stones, temples and stepwells. You just need to slow down and look.
